Davut Sulari was born in 1925 in the village of Çayýrlý, near Erzincan. Along with his skill in improvisation, he was also well-known for his fine playing of the saz, and made many recordings. Passing away in 1985, he was the last representative of the old itinerant aþýk tradition of traveling from village to village on horseback.
