GUATELLİ PAŞA

(1820-1899) Guatelli Pasa, who came to conduct the Mizika-i Hümâyûn in 1856, left this post two years later, but in 1868 was reappointed. Guatelli did several piano transcriptions of the songs of Haci Arif Bey, Rifat Bey and Sevki Bey, and composed polyphonic marches using the Turkish makams, including the Mecidiye Marsi (1856) and Mars-i Sultani (1875). Guatelli Pasa died in Istanbul in 1899. Among his students were Saffet Atabinen, Zati Arca and Osman Zeki Üngör.
